I have a very small iron urn which sits at the entrance to my courtyard wall. Because it is shallow, it would dry out very very fast in the summer making it almost impossible to plant anything in it. The solution…succulents! They are drought tolerant, and look amazing. My container has weathered over the years picking up a beautiful patina which compliments the silver and green foliage of the various succulents I’ve arranged. I love the look of the silver foliage colors against the backdrop of my lichen covered rocks and burgundy cut leaf maple. So if you have a shallow container, try planting a variety of succulents with different shapes and sizes and see how gorgeous it will look!! You will be amazed.
